A lot of company drivers have some life insurance through work and figure that settles it. It might help — but it's worth knowing exactly what you have.
Three things to check in your benefits
- The amount. Group coverage is often a flat amount or a multiple of pay. Compare it with what your family would actually need to keep the house and the bills going.
- What happens if you leave. Group coverage is usually tied to the job. Switch carriers, get laid off or stop driving, and it may end or change. Some plans let you convert or continue coverage; many drivers never check.
- Who's named as beneficiary. Make sure it's current — especially after a marriage, divorce or new baby.
Why some drivers add their own coverage
Coverage you own personally stays with you no matter who you drive for. Some drivers keep the carrier coverage and add a personal policy on top; others rely on the group plan. A licensed agent can compare what you have with what your family would need.
Don't cancel any coverage you have before new coverage is approved and in force.
