Line-of-duty benefits, pension features, and a group life policy get blurred together at the kitchen table. They pay in different situations, and some of them stop when you leave the department.
What is the department’s, and what is yours
- A line-of-duty benefit that may not pay unless the death is ruled in the line of duty
- Group life insurance that can shrink or end at retirement, resignation, or a transfer
- Overtime and details the household spends, which a flat department benefit does not mention
- A spouse who has heard the department takes care of the family and has never seen the certificate
Ask for the certificate, not the rumor. You want the dollar amount, the beneficiary, and what happens if you retire, resign, or transfer.
