The
route.

  • Yards, routes, and wreckers.
  • Early starts in every weather.
  • Employers that change.
  • Bills that run on a schedule.

The
reason.

  • The house.
  • Your partner.
  • Your kids.
  • The life you have built.

Transit, rail, and towing get grouped together because the work moves people or vehicles. The pay structures and the benefits do not group that neatly.

Three jobs, three kinds of paperwork

  • A transit or rail benefit that belongs to that employer or local, not to the next transportation job you might take
  • Tow operators paid per call or as 1099 workers, often with no group life insurance at all
  • Split shifts and forced overtime that a flat benefit amount never mentions
  • A commercial license that lets you work and does not itself include any life insurance

Don’t use a coworker’s benefits summary as yours. A rail employee, a city bus driver, and a tow operator can stand on the same lot and share none of the same coverage.

Transportation questions

I drive a city bus and I have a union. Does the life insurance leave with me?
Sometimes you can convert or continue it, and sometimes it ends with the job. The certificate answers that. Ask while you are still employed, not from a break-room summary.
I run a wrecker and I’m paid per call. Is there a default policy for that?
No. Per-call tow work often has no group life insurance. If someone at home depends on those calls, people in that spot look at a personal policy because there is no employer plan to fall back on.
I used to drive a truck and now I work rail. Does the old planning still cover me?
Only if a policy is still in your own name. Coverage from the trucking job usually ended when that job ended. Rail benefits are a new set of documents, not a continuation.
