A dealership plan, a fleet plan, and a small shop that offers nothing are three different answers. The toolbox often moves. The life insurance often does not.

What changes when you change bays

  • Group life insurance that stays with the dealer group or the fleet, not with your toolbox
  • Flat-rate or night-shift pay the household uses, which a benefit formula may ignore
  • A truck or a small-shop note if you go out on your own
  • Weeks between shops when neither employer’s plan is clearly in force

If you are thinking about leaving a dealer for your own bay, ask what happens to the group policy on your last day before you give notice.

Shop-floor questions

The dealer offered life insurance when I was hired. Is that policy mine?
Usually it is the employer’s group policy. You may be allowed to convert or continue it when you leave, and that window is easy to miss. Get the conversion rules while you still work there.
What happens to coverage if I open a one-bay shop?
The group plan typically ends, or it has to be converted. A policy in your own name does not depend on staying a W-2 tech. Have any new coverage approved and in force before you drop the dealer plan.
Do diesel, fleet, and heavy-equipment mechanics get lumped together?
Not by a careful agent. Shop work, road calls, and work around fuel or at heights are different weeks. Describe the week you actually work.
